Technically, it’s hard to satisfy both with the level design, but somehow Mario’s latest adventure looks like it’s up to the task. Players have to feel like they can succeed despite the ramped-up difficulty and complexity. At the same time, the sequel has to be accessible to newcomers. Inevitably, the game must be harder to satisfy that audience. It has to offer new features and build on core concepts of the original. On one end, the follow-up has to appease the hard-core fans. As a sequel to a hugely successful game, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has to pull off a tricky balancing act.
